BOARDING SCHOOL AND RENOVATION OF URUGUAY SCHOOL

In Avon, Seine-et-Marne, near the forest of Fontainebleau, construction of a boarding school designed to accommodate 200 students, reception spaces, lobby, activity rooms, staff housing and a major renovation of four buildings of the Uruguay high school (Science department, Social Studies department, Documentation and Information Centre and administration). Construction of a 50-car parking.

Le projet d'origine s'adapte au relief du site. L'organisation des espaces internes en plateaux successifs décalés d'un demi-niveau génère une architecture de type vernaculaire en dialogue avec le paysage mais fort peu adaptée à l'usage d'un lycée. Les transformations successives n'ont pas contribué à améliorer l'état des choses. La restructuration globale engagée est alors l'occasion d'en clarifier le fonctionnement. L'implantation de l'internat pose quant à elle la question du parti que l'on peut tirer d'une construction neuve relativement importante dans le site pour renforcer le dispositif en place, qualifier l'espace du parvis actuellement peu structuré et donner à lire un ensemble cohérent et clairement identifiable. La déclivité du site et une implantation en son point culminant, en frange de forêt domaniale confèrent au futur bâtiment une grande visibilité dans le paysage. Le projet proposé reprend à son compte le parti pris vernaculaire des bâtiments existants mais en l'inversant : la construction ne suit plus le dénivelé du terrain mais en recherche les constantes. Etirée sur un linéaire qui lui permet, partant du seuil du lycée, de rejoindre le pavillon d'entrée en cadrant le parvis, elle épouse au plus près les courbes de niveau du coteau de manière à dégager sur la majeure partie de son parcours un rez-de-chaussée plan. Le bâtiment se détache alors du sol pour s'inscrire dans les frondaisons et ménager les transparences au travers du portique.

The original project adapts to the relief of the site. The organization of the internal spaces in successive floors shifted by half a level generates a type of vernacular architecture that dialogues with the landscape, but little adapted to the functioning of a high school. The successive transformations have not helped to improve the state of things. The global reorganization therefore provides the opportunity to give back to those spaces a meaning and to clarify their functioning. The introduction of a boarding school raises the question of the advantages of a relatively big new construction in the site to reinforce the current project and transform it into a coherent and clearly identifiable whole. Setting up the new building at the highest point of the slope of the site, near the edge of the forest gives the project a high visibility in the landscape. The proposed project follows the vernacular approach of the original buildings, but by reversing it: the construction no longer follows the slope of the site but searches for its constants. Stretched linearly from the threshold of the high school to the site’s main entrance, framing the square, it follows the site’s contour lines in order to clear over most of the building’s length, a horizontal ground floor. The building then elevates from the ground to reveal the forest and create transparencies through the portico.
